O-1 Alien of Oustanding Ability

The O-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for an individual of an outstanding ability in the arts, sciences, education, business or athletics which has been demonstrated by sustained national or international acclaim.  Extraordinary ability in science education business or athletics is a level of experience indicating that the person is one of the small percentage who have risen to the very top of the field of endeavor.

An initial grant of O-1 status is valid for two years or the duration of the event. The O-1 visa is renewable in one-year increments and there is no maximum duration for this visa classification. In order to be granted O-1 status an alien  must show at least three of the following:

1. Receipt of nationally or internationally recognized awards;

2.  Membership in organizations that require outstanding achievement;

3.  Publish materials about the applicant and professional or major trade publications;

4.  Judgment of the work of others;

5. Original scientific or scholarly work of major significance in his/her field;

6. Evidence of authorship of scholarly work;

7.  Evidence that he or she has been employed in a critical or essential capacity at an organization with a distinguished reputation; or

8. Has commanded or will command a high salary in relation to others in the field.
